Every year, June 5th is recognized as World Environment Day, dating back to 1974. According to the World Environment Day website, “World Environment Day has developed into a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on urgent issues from marine pollution and global warming to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.”  Each year, the World Environment Day organization has a theme to allow participants to take action in honor of the holiday. This year’s theme is focused on ending plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution and waste is a growing problem as most plastic materials are designed to be single-use items.  According to a key report done by the WED, “The most common single-use plastics found in the environment are, in order of magnitude, cigarette butts, plastic drinking bottles, plastic bottle caps, food wrappers, plastic grocery bags, plastic lids, straws and stirrers, other types of plastic bags, and foam take-away containers.” There is so much more that can be done to help reduce the amount of plastic waste each year, and the WED provides several great resources to do so.

You can learn more about ending plastic pollution here. Start by using reusable water bottles and shopping bags, small changes can have a huge impact! Take action for World Environment Day, and steps towards a greener, healthier planet!
